The Children of Húrin by J.R.R. Tolkien
thingsmeanalot.com — (I read this book back in June for the Once Upon a Time Challenge, wrote this post,... saved the draft, and completely forgot about it until last week - oops.) That’s simply when the discussions will be held, though, so don’t feel obligated to follow that schedule if it doesn’t work for you. (I know myself, and I know there’s no way I keep myself from tearing through LOTR, because I love it so much.) Even though we’re all rereading it, feel free to join if it this is your first time! Sunday Salon: Reading, Read, To Read #47
Becky's Book Reviews — ... busier than others! I can imagine that November and December are going to be pretty busy over there though! I was very excited to finish Mary Barton. Not only did that mean I got to participate in the Classics Circuit blog tour of Elizabeth Gaskell, but it means I finished up the Guardian Reading Challenge! I'm also busy at work finishing up Nation as well. I hope to complete the Dewey Reading Challenge this week. I'm really considering joining the Lord of the Rings Readalong. (January through April 2010) What I read in a previous ...

Challenges for 2010
The Written World — ... Then, there is the LOTR read-along. I am really up in the air about it, to be honest! It's a huge committment for someone that doesn't reread a lot, but I love these books... I don't think I will reread The Hobbit, but there is a good chance I will read the main trilogy. The good thing is that you don't have to read them in the months they are being discussed. I might have to stretch them out a bit. I used to read trilogies all in a row, and I have done that a bit this year, but generally the last few years I have a hard time doing that. ...

Looking to 2010: Readalong and Challenges
Beth Fish Reads — ... 1. The Lord of the Rings Readalong has four hosts, one for each book in the series (including The Hobbit). The idea is to read a book a month from January through April. My last re-read of these novels was in 2005, so I'm due. They are among my all-time favorites. I'm pretty sure I'm going to listen to the audios. Visit Teresa's blog at Shelf Love for more information and to sign up. ...

2010: A Year of Reading Deliberately
Rebecca Reads — ... Lord of the Rings (February, March, April). I read the first volume of The Lord of the Rings while in college and I hated it with a passion. I’ll try it again in February and if I can stand it, I’ll continue for March and April. I did enjoy The Silmarillion in 2008, so maybe I just wasn’t ready for LotR at age 18. I didn’t like The Hobbit when I read it the first time in 2009, so I won’t be joining in for that in January (hosted at ...

Let the Lord of the Rings Read-a-Long Begin!
A Striped Armchair — ... , we’d come up with a format and a button. I think the button is what makes these kind of things official. Anyway, we’ll be reading (or rereading) one book a month, from now until April, and I do hope that you’ll join us. Teresa posted about it back in November, outlining the ‘plan’ and including a Mr. Linky for sign-ups. We’ve got 30 people signed up, and it’s not too late, so feel free to add your name to the list! We’re starting things off with The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, and I’m ...

The Hobbit
Care's Online Book Club — ... Back to ‘now’ times, I also signed up for a Read-A-Long for Lord of the Rings. But I’m only doing this one book, and not LOTR.   (eeeek!  I know, I know) and I see that I was supposed to wait and read this in January, though.    This was a library book. ...

The Sunday Salon: Hobbiting
The Blog Jar — ... I've had the hugest hankering for Tolkien.  Partly because I knew there was a readalong of LOTR commencing, partly because I'm nervous and excited about the wedding and didn't want any meaty reads, and partly because it was time for a reread.  I should have known ahead of time, a few days ago I told Sam that it was time for a LOTR film marathon.  About once a year I hunker down and watch all 3 extended-release films.  Also, I've been threatening to have "my precious" or "in the darkness bind them" engraved on the inside of Sam's wedding band.  I think he ...

Catching Up with Bilbo
A Striped Armchair — ... Hello all of you adventurous wanderers, exploring Middle Earth by reading The Hobbit! We’re now a bit over halfway through January, so we’re halfway through our celebration of all things Bilbo-ish as the first part of the Lord of the Rings read-a-long. As always, don’t let our schedule pressure you, though; if you’ve already completed the book, or if you haven’t started it yet, just move at your own pace. I will say, though, to try to keep posts you link here at about the middle of the text (which is about ...

Readalong 2: The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
Beth Fish Reads — As you know, I'm rereading The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien as part of the Lord of the Rings Readalong. Eva from A Striped Arm Chair is the host for The Hobbit and has posed the second batch of discussion questions for January. (I posted my answers to first Readalong questions last week.) Let's get on to the questions. 1. Where are you in the story? So far, has the book lived up to your expectations (for first-timers)/memories (for rereaders)? What’s surprising or familiar? Beth ...

Crashing the Unexpected Party
In the Shadow of Mt. TBR — ... you didn’t know, I love fantasy.  And before I started blogging, I had read The Hobbit and had started reading The Fellowship of the Ring, put it down to read something else, and forgot to pick it back up.  I’ve been wanting to re-read the first and read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy for a bit, but just not done it.  And with all the ARCs, it doesn’t look like something I’m going to just do on my own, at least not this year. So when I read BethFish’s Lord of the Ring readalong post the ...

LOTR Readalong – The Hobbit
In the Shadow of Mt. TBR — ... I love the fantasy genre, have read Paolini, and am absolutely in love with Katsa and Po in Graceling.  I’ve read all the books in The Chronicles of Narnia, play World of Warcraft, and I rather enjoyed Goblins! An UnderEarth Adventure.  So when I read about the Tolkein Readalong, I decided to Crash the Unexpected Party. January was the month of The Hobbit with A Striped Armchair.  I got a late start, so I’ve had to hurry a bit to catch up, but I’ve now finished the prequel to ...

Reading Review: January Reads and February Goals
The Blog Jar — ... pages.  This means I have 70 books and/or 18,636 pages left.  Holy Cheez-it, I better get to reading! I did pretty well keeping up with the myriad of group reads and challenges I signed up for this year.  I worked on the Marple/Poirot/Holmes, Our Mutual Read, Short Story, Support Your Local Library, Tudor Book, and Year of the Historical Challenges.  I also participated in a Classics Circuit read and the LOTR readalong. Fellowshippin’ with the LOTR Readalong Bunch
In the Shadow of Mt. TBR — ... Well, we are in our second month of the Lord of the Rings Readalong, andClare at The Literary Omnivore is our Fellowship of the Rings host.  Here’s her first set of questions: When did you first hear of The Lord of the Rings? Have you read The Fellowship of the Ring before? What’s your plan of attack, now that we’re dealing with more “mature” literature? Have you ever seen the movies? If so, do you think they’ll influence your reading? If not, well, why haven’t ...
